Scientific American: Understanding Nanotechnology

Understanding Nanotechnology

Description

Everyone today knows what technology is, but what is nanotechnology? Taken from the Greek, nano means 'one billionth part of' a whole. In modern parlance, it means very, very small. Nano-tech is the next step after miniaturization. Mobile phones are miniaturized versions of traditional landline phones. Watches are miniature clocks. Desktop computers are miniature versions of the original analogue calculating machines. Miniaturization is common in today's world - in tomorrow's world, nano-tech will be the new common technology. It will afect everyone on the planet and may change civilization as it is known. This book presents the cutting edge of a new technology that will find usage in medicine, space exploration, communications, manufacturing and almost every other aspect of modern society. Imagine getting an injection of "smart" molecules that can seek out cancer cells and destroy them without hurting any of the surrounding tissue. Imagine a simultaneous space launch via the Shuttle of thousands of robotic probes, each no bigger than an insect and each programmed to do a single task in concert with all the others. And that's just the begnning.

"Singapore, with its great wealth and great poverty existing amid ethnic, linguistic, and cultural tensions, offers fertile ground for bleak fiction, as shown by the 14 tales in this solid Akashic noir anthology...Tan has assembled a strong lineup of Singapore natives and knowledgeable visitors for this volume exploring the dark side of a fascinating country." The Duanne family and the farmers around them fight desperately for the land they love, but the droughts of the thirties force them to abandon their fields. When they join the exodus to the irrigated valleys of California, they discover not the promised land, but an abusive labor system arrayed against destitute immigrants. The system labels all farmers like them as worthless "Okies" and earmarks them for beatings and worse when hardworking men and women, such as Milt and Julia, object to wages so low they can't possibly feed their children. The informal communal relations these dryland farmers knew on the High Plains gradually coalesce into a shared determination to resist. Realizing that a unified community is their best hope for survival, the The Excellence of Play free ebook Dunnes join with their fellow workers and begin the struggle to improve migrant working conditions through democratic organization and collective protest.

Brenda M. King: Silk and Empire

Silk and Empire

Description

In this book, Brenda M. King challenges the notion that Britain always exploited its empire. Creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship were all part of the Anglo-Indian silk trade and were nurtured in the era of empire through mutually beneficial collaboration. The trade operated within and without the empire, according to its own dictates and prospered in the face of increasing competition from China and Japan. King presents a new picture of the trade, where the strong links between Indian designs, the English silk industry and prominent members of the English the arts and crafts movement led to the production of beautiful and luxurious textiles. Lavishly illustrated, this book will be of interest to those interested in the relationship between the British Empire and the Indian subcontinent, as well as by historians of textiles and fashion. -- .

This ultimate celebration of the cat features witty quotes about felines and images by three of the world s most beloved animal photographers. Whether playing, pouncing, or just purring contentedly, these are some of the most adorable kittens and cats ever to grace the printed page. The second edition of this classic handbook includes the latest developments in the diagnosis and treatment of personality disorders that have emerged since the publication of the DSM-IV-TR. Sperry highlights the many significant advances in the field, providing the reader with a complete summary of new Silk and Empire free download pdf intervention strategies, treatment approaches, and research findings. In addition, this text includes greater coverage of Borderline Personality Disorder and presents an introduction to the diagnostic schema likely to be adopted by the DSM-V. The Handbook is at once comprehensive and concise, offering integrative assessment and treatment strategies as well as theoretical overview for the full range of personality disorders. Its reader-friendly style and organization and make it an authoritative and accessible resource for clinicians and students of all mental health disciplines.

Steve Rogers: Control and Estimation, 2nd Edition

Control and Estimation, 2nd Edition

Description

The text is composed of six chapters. The 1st chapter has to do with state estimation and data smoothing. The chapter includes Luenberger observers, alpha-beta-gamma filters, Kalman filters, extended Kalman filters, proportional-integral Kalman filters, and H Infinity filters. It is given at the beginning of the text as it is a necessary interface between control algorithms and sensors. Chapter 2 describes RLS and Kalman filter state estimation approaches to fault detection and includes an example. Chapter 3 has to do with control system design to mitigate the effects of disturbances, including disturbance accommodating control, H Infinity, and ADRC. A few adaptive control methods are described including MRAC and L1 Adaptive Control. Chapter 4 describes ways to tune proportional integral derivative (PID) control algorithms. This is the most commonly used and, therefore, most important control algorithm. Chapter 5 describes several feedforward control techniques. Chapter 6 has a few applications that may be of interest to the reader. It shows a few of the techniques explained in the text by using control system and estimation methods.

This durable, wipe-clean book allows children to trace over the dotted letter-shapes again and again, helping them to develop important pen-control skills and practice letter formation skills. It will help with reading and literacy skills as well as letter formation. It comes with a special wipe-clean pen which is really satisfying to write with, yet easy to wipe off the shiny pages. This fascinating history, recounted from both the American and Japanese perspectives, follows the course of the Empire of the Sun's ultimately unequal struggle against the great allied powers. Drawing on archive material, this new history provides the reader with piercing strategic and political insights which debunk many of the enduring myths which encompass Japan's apocalyptic drive for hegemony in Southeast Asia. Why did Japan invade China? Was war with America and the British Empire inevitable? Why was the Japanese mobile fleet defeated so decisively at Midway? Why did the Japanese continue fighting when defeat was inevitable? Was Control and Estimation, 2nd Edition download ebook pdf Emperor Hirohito merely a puppet of the militarists? Why did the Japanese people acquiesce in the occupation of their homeland? Whilst unsparing in its treatment of Japan's ultimate culpability for unleashing the Second World War, 'Japan at War 1931-1945' is an objective appraisal of the tragedy that engulfed much of the territories under Japanese control, and eventually Japan itself.

Helene Cooper: The House at Sugar Beach: In Search of a Lost African Childhood

The House at Sugar Beach: In Search of a Lost African Childhood

Description

Journalist Helene Cooper examines the violent past of her home country Liberia and the effects of its 1980 military coup in this deeply personal memoir and finalist for the 2008 National Book Critics Circle Award. Helene Cooper is "Congo," a descendant of two Liberian dynasties-traced back to the first ship of freemen that set sail from New York in 1820 to found Monrovia. Helene grew up at Sugar Beach, a twenty-two-room mansion by the sea. Her childhood was filled with servants, flashy cars, a villa in Spain, and a farmhouse up-country. It was also an African childhood, filled with knock foot games and hot pepper soup, heartmen and neegee. When Helene was eight, the Coopers took in a foster child-a common custom among the Liberian elite. Eunice, a Bassa girl, suddenly became known as "Mrs. Cooper's daughter." For years the Cooper daughters-Helene, her sister Marlene, and Eunice-blissfully enjoyed the trappings of wealth and advantage. But Liberia was like an unwatched pot of water left boiling on the stove. And on April 12, 1980, a group of soldiers staged a coup d'etat, assassinating President William Tolbert and executing his cabinet. The Coopers and the entire Congo class were now the hunted, being imprisoned, shot, tortured, and raped. After a brutal daylight attack by a ragtag crew of soldiers, Helene, Marlene, and their mother fled Sugar Beach, and then Liberia, for America. They left Eunice behind. A world away, Helene tried to assimilate as an American teenager. At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill she found her passion in journalism, eventually becoming a reporter for the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. She reported from every part of the globe-except Africa-as Liberia descended into war-torn, third-world hell. In 2003, a near-death experience in Iraq convinced Helene that Liberia-and Eunice-could wait no longer. At once a deeply personal memoir and an examination of a violent and stratified country, The House at Sugar Beach tells of tragedy, forgiveness, and transcendence with unflinching honesty and a survivor's gentle humor. And at its heart, it is a story of Helene Cooper's long voyage home.

Guardian Angel: What You Must Know about God's Design for Women

Description

Every woman knows she was designed for a special role - a role that has been denied to her far too long. In this study of the Bible, Skip Moen re-examines the Genesis account from an Hebraic perspective, applying the findings to New Testament themes. This foundation supports a radical revision of contemporary views about women in the home, the world and the church. The Hebrew text shows us that women were intended to be the protectors, providers, guides and relationship managers in marriage and in the community. Without understanding this crucial Hebraic foundation, marriages flounder and gender issues remain unresolved.

Understanding Codependency

Description

The groundbreaking book "Understanding Co-Dependency" ushered in a new way of thinking about codependency and helped millions of people discover if they were co-dependent, if they were living with a co-dependent, and how to break the cycle. Now, in this revised edition, Joseph Cruse, founding medical director of The Betty Ford Center, provides findings and insights into codependency. Thirty years ago, clinicians viewed alcoholism as a liver disease; today research has revealed that addiction and many codependent behaviors are related to brain functioning. Cruse explores this brain connection and expands on the all-important issues of traumas it relates to codependency, denial, low self-esteem, and self-worth. With updated case studies and exercises, "Understanding Codependency" dispels the notion that the cycle of codependency can't be broken, offering readers a lifeline to the fulfilling relationships and lives they deserve.

Designed for use with theUninvited Study Guide9781400206001 (sold separately). This extensively illustrated book presents the astrophysics of galaxies since their beginnings in the early Universe. It has been thoroughly revised to take into account the most recent observational data, and recent discoveries such as dark energy. There are new sections on galaxy clusters, gamma ray bursts and supermassive black holes. The authors explore the basic properties of stars and the Milky Way before working out towards nearby galaxies and the distant Universe. They discuss the structures of galaxies and how galaxies have developed, and relate this to the evolution of the Universe. The book also examines ways of observing galaxies across the whole electromagnetic spectrum, and explores dark matter and its gravitational pull on matter and light. This book is self-contained and includes several homework problems with hints. It is ideal for advanced undergraduate students in astronomy and astrophysics.

Praise for Katherine Howe: 'Spellbinding...A terrific story' Daily Express 'A transfixing tale of black magic, hauntings and real-life tricks that will keep you up all night' Glamour 'A brilliant take on the 17th Century Salem witch trials' Mirror Katherine Howe's family has lived in the area around Salem Massachusetts for generations dating back to the 1620s. She is a descendant of two accused Salem witches - Elizabeth Proctor and Elizabeth Howe. Katherine is a PhD candidate at Boston University. She lived in Massachusetts and New York with her husband. The House of Velvet and Glass is her second novel to be published by Penguin.

All of Dickinson's preoccupations - death, religion, love, the natural world, the Ranulph Fiennes: Fit for Life free pdf nature of thought - are explored here in detail, but Vendler always takes care to emphasize the poet's startling imagination and the ingenuity of her linguistic invention. Whether exploring less familiar poems or favorites we thought we knew, Vendler reveals Dickinson as 'a master' of a revolutionary verse-language of immediacy and power. "Dickinson: Selected Poems and Commentaries" will be an indispensable reference work for students of Dickinson and readers of lyric poetry. Author and illustrator Victor Perard, a graduate of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, was an art instructor at New York City's Cooper Union fortwenty years. This informative volume reflects his extensive teaching experience and provides practical advice for artists at every level."

On the Heights of Despair

Description

This work shows E.M. Cioran's first grappling with themes he would return to in his mature works: despair and decay, absurdity and alienation, futility and the irrationality of existence. It also presents Cioran as a connoisseur of apocalypse, a theoretician of despair, for whom writing and philosophy both share the "lyrical virtues" that alone lead to a metaphysical revelation.

Keith Duggan: Cliffs of Insanity: a Winter on Ireland's Big Waves

Cliffs of Insanity: a Winter on Ireland's Big Waves

Description

Surfing in Ireland was once considered little more than a fringe and slightly lunatic pursuit. The treacherous coastline and ice waters of the Atlantic did not sit comfortably with the stereotype of surfing as the favoured pastime of the bronzed and privileged. But with the discovery in the past few years of the gargantuan Aileen's wave at the Cliffs of Moher and other heavy waves, the Irish coast has become one of the worst kept secrets in world surfing. In Cliffs of Insanity, the Irish Times sportswriter Keith Duggan tells the story of a dedicated group of surfers in County Clare whose lives revolve around the pursuit of Ireland's wildest waves. The book traces the evolution of Fergal Smith, the young Mayo man whose intuition for big waves has earned him a serious reputation and explores the world of Mickey Smith, the roving Cornish man who discovered Aileen's and whose breathtaking surf photography has caught the Irish landscape in an entirely new and original light. Bitter cold days, broken bones, busted boards, scars, near drownings and countless hours in the freezing water trying to read the ocean is the price they pay for those few transcendent seconds when they master a wave. Cliffs of Insanity is about the importance of pursuing what matters in life but it is also about community and friendship, and the passionate pursuit of a way of life that flies in the face of everything championed in Ireland over the last decade.

Computer science as an engineering discipline has been spectacularly successful. Yet it is also a philosophical enterprise in the way it represents the world and creates and manipulates models of reality, people, and action. In this book, Paul Dourish addresses the philosophical bases of human-computer interaction. He looks at how what he calls "embodied interaction" -- an approach to interacting with software systems that emphasizes skilled, engaged practice rather than disembodied rationality -- reflects the phenomenological approaches of Martin Heidegger, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and other twentieth-century philosophers. The phenomenological tradition emphasizes the primacy of natural practice over abstract cognition in everyday activity. Lords of the North (The Last Kingdom Series, Book 3) download book Dourish shows how this perspective can shed light on the foundational underpinnings of current research on embodied interaction. He looks in particular at how tangible and social approaches to interaction are related, how they can be used to analyze and understand embodied interaction, and how they could affect the design of future interactive systems.

Spies and Commissars: Bolshevik Russia and the West

Description

In the immediate aftermath of the Revolution, the Western powers were anxious to prevent the spread of Bolshevism across Europe. Lenin and Trotsky were equally anxious that the Communist vision they were busy introducing in Russia should do just that. But neither side knew anything about the other. The revolution and Russia's withdrawal from the First World War had ensured a diplomatic exodus from Moscow and the usual routes to vital information had been closed off. Into this void stepped an extraordinary collection of opportunists, journalists and spies -- sometimes indeed journalists who were spies and vice versa: in Moscow Britain's Arthur Ransome, the American John Reed and Sidney Reilly -- 'Ace of Spies' -- all traded information and brokered deals between Russia and the West; in Berlin, Paris and London, the likes of Maxim Litvinov, Adolf Ioffe and Kamenev tried to infiltrate the political elite and influence foreign policy to the Bolshevik's advantage. Robert Service, acclaimed historian and one of our finest commentators on matters Soviet, turns his meticulous eye to this ragtag group of people and, with narrative flair and impeccable research, reveals one of the great untold stories of the twentieth century.

Computer science as an engineering discipline has been spectacularly successful. Yet it is also a philosophical enterprise in the way it represents the world and creates and manipulates models of reality, people, and action.
